Overview: In this episode, I talk with mom Alessandra Rosa on exposing the gap in preschool education for neurdivergent learners. We also discuss advocating for your kids and how, as moms, we’ll go to the ends of the earth to give our kids what they need for success.

Excerpt #1: "Look, no. There's nothing to figure out. Obviously, you are not equipped to handle my son. And you are not equipped to handle anyone like my son because if they're not in the little bubble or the perfect little scenario and they step out of your standards, they're not going to succeed." This brings to mind so many ideas about “traditional” schooling and how it often doesn’t fit the needs of asynchronous kids. Preschool education is especially lacking in this area, as Alessandra points out in this episode!

Excerpt #2: "I'm still upset. I'm upset with the system, because the system is set up to fail kids like him. You either are one extreme or you're the other. If you're in the middle and you need a little help, then there's no option for you. Either you're homeschooled or your parents stopped working...there's no support system. I can't even think of what it would have been like if I was a single parent. I would've been in a freaking depression or going insane or something. The system is set up for them to fail." This could apply to more than just preschools. Essentially, the needed support isn’t there. Our education system doesn’t offer services to middle-of-the-road kids who need a little support. Alessandra is hoping to change that.

Excerpt #3: "The world is full of people that are going to try to put you down in a second. But you don't need your family to be holding you down. Your family are the people who put you up. So that when the people outside try to put you down, you're strong enough to stay up. And that's just life, you know? There's always going to be someone trying to push you down for whatever - for your position, for your husband, for your job - whatever it is. Someone is always going to try to be better, and not always in a nice way." Such a good lesson here. As a mom, it’s my job to support my children - no matter the behaviors, no matter the struggle. The world will not always be so kind, so it’s crucially important that I am.

Your turn: Has your out-of-the-box child been misunderstood in school? How are you advocating for their needs? DM me on Instagram @on.the.hard.days and share your thoughts with me! You are a rockstar, Mama!
