Episode 09: A Rough Night

Megan recounts a recent meltdown from Mr. 7. The incident leads to a discussion about apologizing - and more importantly, empathy. Whether or not you agree with apologizing, you'll be able to relate to this story of managing a strong-willed, out-of-the-box child's rough night.(Listen below!)

Let’s talk about empathy. My son has a REALLY hard time showing it. I know he feels it - and is in fact extremely sensitive. But he struggles with being vulnerable. He wants to feel in control at all times.

Which is why, when we had a rough night last week, Mr. 7 couldn’t own up to anything. He couldn’t apologize. He couldn’t hug. The more we pushed him into a corner (figuratively), the more stubborn he became.

But here’s the thing - we felt trapped that night, too. I understand that this type of parenting isn’t healthy. It doesn’t do him any good at all. It was a lose lose situation. Once you hear the story, you’ll understand that honestly, some nights are just tough. Sometimes there aren’t any answers. There aren’t tips and tricks. There are struggles, and then the next day becomes a blank slate.

I’d love to know your thoughts on this episode - and about apologizing and empathy in particular.
